The ongoing discussion on climate change and protection of the environment has gained in importance over the last few years. Nowy Styl is aware that its activities contribute to the climate change and has taken responsibility to ensure that its business activities and products are conducted in a sustainable and responsible manner.
Nowy Styl uses Dutch sustainability instrument that helps companies and governments to reduce CO2. Find out more about CO2 Performance Ladder here. We are the only large organisation in our industry that has obtained this certificate!
In order to effectively reduce CO2 emissions, we calculate our CO2 footprint on an annual basis. With the help of this measurement, we determine our annual objectives. Measures that we take into account include the choice of materials and machines that are more environmentally friendly, reducing fuel consumption and the use of green energy. We also educate our employees and customers.
Almost 50% of the direct emissions are due to production facilities in Poland and another 40% are due to the energy consumption of factories and offices in Germany. For this reason, we want to focus on measures to reduce energy consumption. Therefore, we will use sustainable electricity in our production facilities in Poland and purchase energy-efficient machines to optimize production.
As fuel consumption accounts for 9% of direct emissions, we are planning to introduce, for the time being in the Netherlands, a new car fleet consisting of 100% electric vehicles.
Indirect emissions come from the electricity consumption in factories and offices in Poland and Germany. Therefore, we plan to keep the energy efficiency of heating in German offices at 2% and to use LED lighting in Dutch offices. Business flights are responsible for 4% of indirect emissions, so inside the company we are constantly developing and promoting the use of video conferencing system.
Scope 1 – direct emissions are emissions emitted by installations that are owned or controlled by the organization, such as emissions from their own gas use (gas boilers, combined heat and power plants and furnaces) and emissions from their own fleet.
Scope 2 – indirect emissions are emissions that are generated by the generation of electricity and heat, or cooling and steam in installations that do not belong to the company, but that are used by the organization (for example the emissions generated in power stations).
The goal we want to achieve by 2025 is to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.1% every year. For scopes 1 and 2, the data are presented below.
Direct emissions (scope 1) will be reduced by 1.3% in 2025 compared to 2018, while indirect emissions (scope 2) in 2025 will be reduced by 27% compared to 2018.
In 2019, the relative CO2 emissions decreased for 29% compared to the previous year. In absolute terms, there was also a decrease, both in direct and indirect emissions. We have achieved this result by reducing our overall energy consumption. Moreover, the company's turnover has increased, so the ratio of CO2 emissions to turnover is much better.
We are always in search of possibilities to reduce CO2 emissions. If you have ideas, please let us know.
The confirmation of our efforts to reduce harmful emissions is the CO2 Performance Ladder certificate which Nowy Styl received in 2019. You can read about details here.
